These principles are not just for nature enthusiasts, but also for climbers. The Leave No Trace principles are guidelines designed to help you minimize your impact on the environment when enjoying the great outdoors.

Here are some fun tips to help you enjoy your climb while protecting the environment:

7 Principles of Leave No Trace

1. Plan ahead and prepare

Before you head out, research the location and plan your trip accordingly. Consider the weather, the terrain, and the type of climb you will be undertaking. This will help you avoid any unexpected situations and minimize your impact. Don't forget to pack your favorite snacks and drinks to keep you fueled for the climb!

2. Travel within established trails and campsites

Stick to established trails and campsites. These areas are designed to withstand the impact of human activity. Avoid creating new trails or campsites, as this can damage the environment.

3. Dispose of waste properly

Take out all trash, leftover food and litter that you bring in or come across!

Even though apple cores and banana peels are organic doesn't mean you can just leave them! 

If you need to go to the toilet, please ensure you do it off the trail and bury it atleast 30cm deep, taking your toilet paper with you.

4. Leave stuff alone

Leave rocks, plants, and other natural features as you found them. Rock stacking may seem harmless and fun to try, but it can actually be detrimental to micro-habitats. [1]

5. Minimise fire impact

Use a stove for cooking instead of building a campfire. If you do build a campfire, use established fire rings and keep the fire small. Check for any local fire bans or restrictions before starting a fire.

6. Respect wildlife

Observe wildlife from a distance and do not approach or feed them. Store food and trash securely to avoid attracting wildlife. Who knows, you might spot a rare bird or animal during your climb!

7. Be considerate of others

Respect other visitors by minimizing noise, yielding to other climbers, and camping away from trails and other visitors. Plus, you never know who you might meet during your climb!

The Leave No Trace principles are essential for all people to learn as they help maintain access to our precious crags across Australia, including here in South East Queensland. As a climber, it is your responsibility to ensure you are following these guidelines if you want to keep climbing for decades to come. So, pack your gear, follow these tips, and climb your way to the top while protecting the environment!
